Three Common Causes of Wheel Damage

Curbs, pothole impacts and neglected wheel care can leave different kinds of damage. Surface blemishes and structural problems need different responses. These are three situations to watch for, not a statistical ranking of wheel damage causes.

1. Pothole impacts

A pothole impact can damage a wheel or tire. A visible mark does not reveal the full extent of the damage. If you notice air loss, vibration, a visible bend or a crack after an impact, seek assessment from a qualified tire or wheel professional rather than assuming refinishing will resolve it.

Do not try to straighten, weld or patch a damaged wheel yourself. Follow your vehicle manufacturer's tire-pressure guidance, and ask a qualified professional about suspected wheel or tire damage. The Wheel Guys does not repair bent or cracked wheels.

2. Wheel-care products and surface buildup

Brake dust and road grime can collect on wheel surfaces. Follow the vehicle and wheel manufacturer's cleaning instructions rather than treating buildup as proof of structural damage. Avoid aggressive abrasives or cleaners that are not approved for your finish.

For example, Tesla's Model 3 cleaning instructions warn that chemical-based wheel cleaners and pre-wash products can damage the wheel finish. Check the instructions for your own vehicle; a cleaner suitable for one finish may not suit another. Staining or finish damage requires assessment before any cosmetic work is agreed.

3. Curb contact

Scraping a curb can leave scratches and gouges in the wheel finish, often called curb rash. Leave clearance when parking and do not assume a small-looking scrape means the wheel and tire are undamaged. Hard impacts, cracks, bends, air loss or vibration call for professional assessment, not a DIY cosmetic fix.
